What is Shatavari and how do I take it?

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is a herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, often noted for its potential support in balancing female hormones. This wellness supplement is a premium tincture that extracts the pure herb into medical-grade alcohol, which may offer faster absorption compared to powders or tablets.

Shatavari is also traditionally used to support a healthy gut, heart, and immune system. Scientific interest has grown around its polyphenols and saponins, which are thought to stimulate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory responses in human cells for both males and females. Additionally, Shatavari has been studied as a supplement for potentially enhancing muscular strength and endurance in men.

Recommended Dosage: 1 ml (15 – 20 drops) in 200 ml of water, 3 times daily.
Contraindications:

  • Asparagus Allergies: Avoid Shatavari if you are allergic to asparagus.
  • Changes in Oestrogen Levels: Shatavari contains phytoestrogens, which may alter oestrogen levels. This may be beneficial for some conditions but could exacerbate others, such as uterine fibroids.

Always consult with your GP or healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you are on other medications.

Suggested benefits of Shatavari

Shatavari has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for promoting fertility and supporting the female reproductive system. Recent studies, such as a 2018 review in Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy, suggest it may help with conditions like hormonal imbalances and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Additionally, Shatavari is often included in herbal formulations aimed at alleviating menopause symptoms and has been used to help manage anxiety and depression.

What is a herbal tincture?

Tinctures are concentrated herbal extracts made by soaking plant parts in alcohol to extract the active ingredients. This method, used for millennia in traditional herbal medicine, offers a convenient way to consume beneficial plant compounds.

Our premium herbal tinctures are made in the UK using a 1:3 ratio of Shatavari root to 25% alcohol. We use medical-grade alcohol, which is grain-derived and adheres to British and European pharmacopoeia standards, ensuring safety for human consumption.

What is an adaptogen?

Shatavari is considered an adaptogen, a type of herb believed to support the body in adapting to stress and promoting resilience. Ideally, adaptogens should: a) decrease stress-induced damage, b) be safe and beneficial even with frequent use, c) lack withdrawal effects, and d) not excessively influence normal bodily functions.
